Preparing Your Appliances for an Orange County Summer

Preparing Your Appliances for an Orange County Summer

Orange County summers bring weeks of temperatures in the 80s and 90s, and your appliances feel every degree. The harder they work, the more likely something breaks — usually at the worst possible time. A little preventive maintenance now can save you from an emergency service call in August.

Here are the tasks our technicians at Alex Appliance Repair recommend every spring.

Clean Your Refrigerator Condenser Coils

This is the single most impactful thing you can do. The condenser coils — usually located behind or underneath your refrigerator — release heat from the cooling system. When they’re caked with dust, pet hair, and kitchen grease, your compressor works overtime to keep things cold.

How to do it: Unplug the refrigerator. If the coils are on the back, pull the unit away from the wall. If they’re underneath, remove the kick plate at the front. Use a coil brush (about $10 at any hardware store) to gently clean the coils, then vacuum up the debris.

How often: Twice a year — once in spring before summer hits, and once in fall. If you have pets, do it quarterly.

A refrigerator running with dirty coils uses 15–25% more electricity and is far more likely to suffer a compressor failure. We see this constantly in Huntington Beach homes, especially with older side-by-side models.

Check and Clean Your Dryer Vent

Lint buildup in your dryer vent is a fire hazard — that’s reason enough. But it also forces your dryer to run longer cycles, wearing out the heating element and thermal fuse faster.

Warning signs: Clothes take more than one cycle to dry, the dryer feels unusually hot to the touch, or you notice a musty smell on freshly dried clothes.

What to do: Disconnect the vent hose from the back of the dryer and clean it out. If your vent run is longer than a few feet or has multiple bends, consider hiring a professional vent cleaning service once a year. Check the exterior vent flap to make sure it opens freely and isn’t blocked by debris or nesting birds.

Maintain Your Dishwasher

Huntington Beach tap water is moderately hard, which means mineral deposits build up inside your dishwasher over time. This affects spray arm performance, clogs the filter, and leaves white film on your dishes.

Monthly maintenance:

  • Remove and rinse the bottom filter (most modern dishwashers have a twist-out filter)
  • Run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or two cups of white vinegar on the top rack
  • Inspect the spray arms for clogged nozzles — a toothpick clears them quickly
  • Check the door gasket for mold or food residue

Service Your Ice Maker

If your refrigerator has a built-in ice maker, summer is when it works the hardest. Replace the water filter according to the manufacturer’s schedule (usually every 6 months). Inspect the water supply line behind the refrigerator for kinks or slow leaks. If your ice has developed an off taste or the cubes are smaller than usual, a new filter typically solves it.

Inspect Your Garbage Disposal

Before summer entertaining season kicks in, run a few ice cubes through the disposal to clean the blades, followed by cold water and half a lemon for freshness. Check under the sink for any slow drips from the disposal connections. A small leak now becomes a cabinet full of mold by September.

Don’t Forget Your Range Hood

Your range hood filter collects grease all year, but summer cooking — especially grilling and searing — accelerates buildup. Most mesh filters are dishwasher-safe. Pop them out, run them through a heavy cycle, and reinstall. A clean filter improves ventilation and reduces cooking odors in your home.
